Elevated ten metres above sea level, the Plymouth Peninsula development subtly and seamlessly combinies public realm with private residences drawing panoramic views towards the surrounding beaches and Caribbean sea.
Comprised of two prominent sculptural forms, the development will host a mixed program for residents and visitors combining apartments with retail and leisure amenities - challenging the traditional typologies on the island. Each stone-clad form envelopes a private tropical courtyard space providing a shaded landscaped interior and refuge from the coastal elements.

Tapia Cabins, Masterplan Configurations
Tapia Cabins is a new modular hospitality retreat concept focused on re-thinking Caribbean lifestyle and the traditional hotel concept.
The cabin concept follows extensive research into the tourism and hospitality market of Tobago - an emerging market in the Caribbean and sister island to the twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago.
M_A/D’s research into local culture, history and the perception of Caribbean architecture (globally) has presented a dynamic shift away from traditional hospitality typologies found on the island, resulting in a focus on celebrating the unique experiential qualities of the islands.
The cabins were conceived to adapt to the changing needs of emerging/established tourism markets with varied terrains and environments (coastal and inland) without compromising on the spatial and material qualities found in many 5 star retreats in the region. This is conjunction with the integration of smart technology into each cabin.
As one of the Caribbean’s foremost emerging tourism destinations, Tobago is still largely underdeveloped (primarily due to conservation and /or lack of investment) and hosts a variety of rich, diverse natural landscapes. Preservation of the island’s natural landscapes through sustainable development remains essential to maintaining its presence as a unique destination - undepinned by local planning and development policies.
Tapia Cabins encapsulates the concept of strategic, sustainable development with the flexibility of erecting multi-unit configurations in a number of tropical terrains and Tobago provides the perfect backdrop to explore a new take on the region’s accommodation, hospitality and lifestyle.
Our site for the first four cabins will be in Plymouth Peninsula, Tobago (2022) with a wider framework of sites across the island. The Tapia Cabins product will allow also landowners, developers and operators a commercially versatile offering, whether a start-up or multi-national brand.

Our proposal for the Plymouth Peninsula (Phase 2) development explores the historic archeological strata of the locale providing a rich backdrop to a prominent coastal site.

Transatlantic Slavery Memorial - Bristol, UK
In these times, understanding our shared history is key to developing meaningful dialogue and reconciliation. 8 years ago M_A/D embarked on research exploring the impact of the transatlantic slave trade on wider communities in the UK resulting in a proposal for a memorial in Bristol - one of the first of it's kind in the UK.

Outdoor Lounge and Boardwalk - Tapia Cabins
In addition to the cluster of sleeper/amenity cabins, a perimeter boardwalk will act as a ‘green’ permeable link between the cabins and the public realm. Creating a new local outdoor destination with the opportunity for multi-purpose activities is at the heart of the Tapia Cabin concept.
The positioning of outdoor seating along the boardwalk not only enables an important visual panorama between Lover’s retreat beach and the cabin cluster but also performs as an overflow to the amenity/lounge cabin and a destination for seasonal outdoor film screenings - one of the first for the island of Tobago.

Tapia Cabins - Interior
M_A/D founder and architect Herman Morgan will be presenting an insight into the rich and varied architecture of the Caribbean and its capital cities.
Over the last decade, the architect has explored the relationship between architecture, urbanism, culture and sustainable development, identifying the varied approaches adopted by each island and the environmental challenges that lay ahead.
